Patryk Makuch was the match-winner Raków Częstochowa desperately needed. The striker's brace secured a 2-1 victory over Motor Lublin in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa.
The win is Raków's first of the season, lifting them off the bottom of the table. Before the match, the team sat in 18th place with just three points from seven games.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 34th minute through Kamil Lukoszek. Raków responded just before half-time. In the 42nd minute, Patryk Makuch finished from a Marko Bulat pass to equalise. The hosts sealed the win in the 77th minute. Makuch found the net again, this time from a Vladyslav Kochergin cross.
It marks the first three points of a season that had begun with a string of defeats. Raków's form coming into the match was four consecutive losses. Manager Dawid Szwarga stressed the importance of the result afterwards. He said it was a match they had to win. He added that they showed character and finally turned their play into points, and that this is just the start of the hard work.
Raków's next fixture is the aforementioned trip to Warsaw in almost two months' time, giving the team a period for training and tactical work to build some momentum.
Raków Częstochowa will face Zagłębie Lubin in the next Ekstraklasa match on September 15th. According to official data, the team will still have to do without the injured Adriano and Erick Otieno. Raków is in last, 18th place in the table with three points after seven rounds.
