Raków Częstochowa president Wojciech Cygan has openly admitted the club's failures in the transfer market, which have plunged the former Polish champions into a severe crisis. The team sits bottom of the Ekstraklasa with just three points from nine games and the league's leakiest defence.

The key issue has been poor transfer business. Cygan is not making excuses. “Undoubtedly, the low effectiveness of transfers did not help us,” the president said. “The truth is that the two previous transfer periods were simply poor.” Following the departure of builder Mark Papszun, the club failed to adequately replace key players like Zoran Arsenić, Ivi Lopez, and Tomáš Petrášek. Experiments with formations and injuries to defenders, including Stratos Svarnas and Fran Tudor, have only made things worse. Raków has already conceded 21 goals this season.

The on-pitch crisis is matched by problems off it. Cygan sharply criticised the authorities of Częstochowa for their handling of the new stadium project on the site of the former Elanex factory. “We were misled, led astray, and you could use a strong statement that we were also deceived,” stated the president. “We believed people who, sitting with us at the table, with a smile on their faces promised things they knew perfectly well they would never deliver.” The matter has become so serious that a referendum on the recall of city president Krzysztof Matyjaszczyk is scheduled for 25 October. Meanwhile, the team continues to play at the stadium on Limanowskiego Street.

Raków's management is already probing the market for reinforcements in the winter transfer window. Stabilising the defence is the priority. The club is also counting on the return of injured players to improve the situation in the coming weeks. The immediate focus is the upcoming match against GKS Katowice on 9 October at 20:30. This clash with the ninth-placed team is key for morale and the fight for survival. A pre-season friendly in July ended 1-1. Ahead of this confrontation, check the fixtures schedule.

Wojciech Cygan worked for almost eight years at a club in Katowice, adding a personal edge to the coming fixture. Raków must find a way to harness the efficiency of Patryk Makuch, who already has five goals this season. The club is also calling for fan unity in this difficult moment. Recent results, including the last 3-2 loss to Korona Kielce, show that every point will be precious. The full schedule of the relegation battle is visible in the standings.
